Conjunctivitis appears as an inflammation or infection of the thin membrane (conjunctiva) that covers the whites of the eyes and the inside part of the eyelids.  

The eye turns red as a consequence of a natural reaction of defense, which makes the eye surface´s blood flow increase in order to fight the infection.

Frequent causes of conjunctivitis

  • Virus infections associated with colds or herpes simplex.
  • Bacterial infections transmitted by the contact between the hands and the eye when touching anything infected.
  • Foreign objects inside the eyelids.
  • Exposition to ultraviolet light.
  • Alergies caused by make up or by those solutions used to clean contact lenses.
  • Wind.
  • Smoke and other kinds of air pollution.
  • Chlorine from swimming pools.

Homemade recipes for conjunctivitis

These are some homemade recipes that serve as effective treatments to reduce and remove conjunctivitis.

  • Fennel and chamomile tea
    Apply compresses of wet tea bags or any piece of cloth wet with very concentrated chamomile or fennel infusions.
  • Elder flowers treatment for conjunctivitis
    Make an infusion with 20grs of elder flowers in a liter of water. Apply this preparation on the eyes with pieces of cotton many times a day.
  • Carrot and spinach juice
    Make this effective juice against conjunctivitis with 200 ml of spinach juice and 300 ml of carrot juice, and drink it many times a day.
  • Natural remedy made of Indian currant
    The Indian currant juice mixed with honey is effective to treat conjunctivitis. You should mix it with 2 tablespoons of honey tea and drink it twice a day.
  • Mallow infusion
    Prepare an infusion with 50 grs of mallow leaves and flowers in half a liter of water. Let it boil for 10 minutes. Then, wash your eyes with this preparation still warm.
  • Chamomile tea for conjunctivitis
    This is an effective treatment to remove conjunctivitis. You should make a cup of chamomile tea using two tablespoons or two tea bags of chamomile. Let it boil for 10 minutes and then wash your eyes with this tea.
  • Coriander homemade remedy to remove conjunctivitis
    Wash your eyes with a handful of dry coriander in 60 ml of water. This preparation reduces pain and swelling.
  • Cornflower and eyebright 
    Mix a teaspoon of cornflower, a teaspoon of eyebright and a pinch of salt in a glass of warm water. After that, place this preparation in a pot and boil for some minutes. Then, let it cool and strain with a gauze.
    Wash your eyes with this preparation two or three times a day.
  • Vitamins against conjunctivitis
    Vitamins A and B2 have proved to be useful as a treatment to remove conjunctivitis. Intake food rich in vitamin A, such as whole milk, curd cheese, butter, carrots, pumpkins, green leaves vegetables, tomatoes, mangoes and papayas. Also, intake food containing vitamin B2, such as green leaves vegetables, milk, almonds, citrus, bananas and tomatoes.
  • Apple poultice
    Apply a warm apple poultice made of cooked apples or a wrap made of raw potatoes on the eyes.
  • Goat´s milk yogurt homemade remedy
    Take a portion of goat´s milk yogurt and apply on the eyes every day. Also, you can apply a poultice of yogurt on the eyes every day.
  • Compresses of Hammamelis to reduce irritation
    Place compresses made of gauzes wet with Hammamelis on the eyes for 15 minutes in order to release irritation.
  • Warm and cold water
    Alternate cold water compresses with warm water ones. Let them work for five minutes on the eyes. Cold compresses shrink the enlarged blood vessels relieving in such way, the redness and the swelling produced by conjunctivitis. Whereas warm compresses relieve swelling.
    Apply only the warm compress if it is more effective than applying both of them.
  • Raspberry tea
    Make an infusion with five raspberry leaves in a cup of boiling water and wash your eyes. Boil the raspberry leaves for 10 minutes.
  • Carrot and parsley juice
    Make 200 ml of raw parsley juice and add 300 ml of carrot juice. Then, drink the preparation every day. This is very beneficial to treat conjunctivitis.
  • Salt water
    Mix warm water with a tablespoon of salt in a basin and soak your face blinking as possible. Repeat twice a day.
  • Apples, cucumbers and potatoes against conjunctivitis
    Apply a warm apple poultice, a raw potato wrap or a grated cucumber poultice on the eyes.
  • Horsetail tea as an anti-inflammatory
    Make a horsetail tea to relieve conjunctivitis.

When conjunctivitis becomes worst

Visit a doctor immediately if you have the following symptoms:

  • Conjunctivitis gets worst if it is caused by bacteria and if it keeps oozing after 2 days.
  • Excessively painful red eyes.
  • Change in vision.
  • Plenty of greenish discharge.
  • A recent injury to the eye before conjunctivitis appears, because this infection could have injured the cornea and an infection could have entered the eye.

Varices appear as a consequence of a failure in the valves located in the veins of legs. This failure makes the blood to accumulate and to increase its pressure in the veins walls which swell and inflate leading to varices ulcers.
