How to sunbathe without burning the skin

Useful tips to sunbath without burning

Before sunbath:

  • Prepare your body at least 10 days before exposing yourself to the sun for a prolonged time with a healthy alimentation to get the perfect tan, without burning your skin doing it.
  • For sunbathing the skin should to be clean, hydrated and no trace of makeup.
  • Avoid using products which contain alcohol (deodorants, perfume, etc.), because they can cause spots.
  • Choose from the best quality sun products and with the suitable protection factor for your skin and your sun resistance. If you don't know which one is for you, discover your phototype.
  • Apply the sun product half an hour before sun exposure, over dry skin.
  • USE OF SUNSCREENS
    - Apply the sunscreen half an hour before sun exposure.
    - Be generous over the sensitive parts like the face, neck, neckline, ears, shoulders and insteps.
    - Apply the sunscreen each time you leave the water of after an excessive sweating.
  • Protect your lips and scars with lipstick sunscreen and the eyes with quality sunglasses to avoid irritations or wrinkles around the eyes area.

During the sunbath

  • The first 3 or 4 days you shouldn't sunbath in direct for more than 15 minutes, it is recommended to use PF higher than indicated for your skin.
    Then gradually increase the time of sun exposure as skin gets more golden, but no more than 2 hours straight. Despite getting tan will take time, tone will last longer and especially you will be taking care your skin.
  • On the third day the skin goes into crisis. Is the time when melanin stimulated during the previous days, achieves the epidermis but can't protect it yet. After about 10 days of progressive exposure, the skin will be ready to receive sunbathing with regular PF.
  • Is better to avoid sunbathing between 12 and 16 hours, even if you are tanned. At those hours sun rays affect directly the land producing a lot of damage and little tanned effect on the skin.
  • The hair protects from the sun. Bald men should use a cap to protect their heads.
  • Drink a lot of water to avoid dehydration. A dehydrated skin would not produce the necessary melanin to getting tanned.
  • Do not remain still for a long time in the sun. Being in movement, the sunlight is better distributed and you get a more even tan. 
  • Be aware that water, snow and sand reflect the sun increasing its power.
  • When it is a bit cloudy sun's radiation has the almost the same effect than in sunny days (if there is sun light, there is sun radiation). So, is necessary to use sunscreen those days too.
  • Children and the sun. You must not expose children under 5 month old to the sun and until they get three years old that must be done being very careful.
  • During pregnancy, there may appear some spots or chloasma, which are not easy to remove.
  • Be careful with phototoxic medicines, such as birth control pills, those can produce unsightly spots on the skin.

  • After sunbathing is important to take a shower using warm water, in order to close the pores without an intense change of temperature, dry well.
    To prolong tan, apply an after-sun cream, which have painkillers, anti-inflammatory, moisturizing, soothing and regenerative epithelium, which regular moisturizers does not have.
  • Give special attention to your face and around the eyes, which are the areas that most suffer negative sun effects.
  • If you use self tanner after sunbathing you will get a darker tone and avoid that "hurry" from the first days; which generally ends in burnings or even worse.
