Although you do not know, at home there are a great variety of very useful elements to create homemade musical instruments. All we need is some carton tubes, boxes, plastic cups, tiny stones, tins, string, etc.
In this article, you will find some simple ideas to create different musical instruments and have fun with kids.
Ideas to create musical instruments
Homemade maracas
- 2 plastic cups (could be yogurt or jam plastic cup) or a little plastic bottle.
- Beans, buttons, tiny stones, peanuts, etc.
- Adhesive tape or any adhesive you have.

Place the beans, buttons, peanuts, etc. in the plastic cups. Join both plastic cups with the adhesive tape (by the top) and the maraca is ready.
If you do not have plastic cups at home, you can use a little bottle with the same elements (buttons, stones, etc) close it and add adhesive tape.
Homemade guitar
- An empty box.
- Thin rubber bands.
Make a hole to the empty box and put the thin rubber bands from one end to the other. The rubber bands should be onto the hole.
Handheld drums
- Many tins of different shapes.
- A medium carton box.
- Adhesive tape.
- A wooden or metal spoon.
- A broad ribbon.
Make holes to the box and introduce the different tins, taking into account that part of the tins should be outside the box (the highest part of the tin). Apply adhesive tape in all the holes and tins.
Every tin will produce a different sound when the kid hit it with the wooden or metal spoon.
To conclude, tie a string or broad ribbon to each end of the box so as the child can march playing the drums.
Homemade trumpet
- A carton tube.
- Aluminium paper.
- A polystyrene cup.
- Adhesive with no toluene (to protect polystyrene).
Wrap the carton tube with the aluminium paper. Stick the polystyrene cup to one end of the tube. Then, make a little hole to the cup to connect the cup with the carton tube and you have the homemade trumpet ready.
Homemade xylophone
- Glass bottles.
- A wooden or metal stick.
This instrument should be made under parental supervision.

Collect 8 thick glass bottles so as not to break them when hitting. Place the bottles making a row and fill them with water, one bottle should have less water than the one next to it. For example, the first bottle should have more water than the second one, the third bottle should have less water that the second one and so on. The last bottle should be almost empty.
In order to create music with these bottles, children have to softly hit the bottles and different sound will come from them.
Also, you can fill the bottles with tempera paints or solvent dyes to add color to the xylophone. Furthermore, you can stick color papers, sequins, glitter, etc.
