If you want to create .ico images to use as icons in Windows, we explain several options to achieve this.

Converting images to file icons (.ico)

If you want to customize Windows using different icons in each folder, you will need to convert any image (jpg, gif, png, etc) to .ico extension. This is not achieved simply by renaming the file.

In order to do that, we have several options. One of them is to use specific programs that can convert any image to icon, for example Image2ico.

But if you want to avoid installing a program, below you will find two examples of how to convert an image to .ico.

Creating icons with Paint

Paint is a tool that can be found in all Windows PCs. With this simple image editing software, we can create icons in the following way:

  • Open the image.
  • Go to File – Save as.
  • In "Type" choose the option "24-bit bitmap (*.bmp; *.dib)" and at the end of the file name type .ico, for example: "newicon.ico".

Done, the image is now converted and ready to be used as an icon.

Online applications to convert files to .ico

Sometimes, when we use Paint we do not usually get perfect images; for this reason, the best solution, if you have Internet, is to use a site to convert an image to .ico online.

The page is Convertico.com. The only problem is that it only accepts PNG or ICO images; therefore, if you have one image in JPG or GIF format, you can open it with Paint, save it as PNG, and then use convertico.com to convert it.
